Being the Best Man in a wedding is an amazing experience. On the one hand, you will stand by your friend’s side as he ties the knot (and as he plans the Big Day too). On the other hand, this role will be accompanied by a lot of responsibility.
Of all your tasks as a Best Man, delivering a great wedding speech is one of the most important ones. After all, you are the groom’s honor attendant – and everyone expects you to give a speech that’s funny, emotional and truly honest.
How can you create a wedding speech that will leave everyone smiling? Here are some tips to consider.
- Don’t procrastinate. Writing a good speech doesn’t just happen overnight, so take your time to write and edit – also take your time to practice it in the mirror as well. Doing this can make the entire difference in the world!
- Keep it short. In general, wedding speeches shouldn’t be longer than 5 minutes (or even shorter than that, depending on the day-of schedule the bride and groom have created). Stick to being short and sweet and you will definitely nail it!
- When in doubt, follow the pattern. That white sheet of paper can be quite intimidating, so if you feel lost for words, follow the “classic pattern”: start with an introduction (a joke or a pun), thank the hosts for the event, tell a story about the groom (which shows his qualities, as well as the qualities of his bride) and wrap up the speech with a toast (wishing the couple a happy life together).
